Free Workshops for Teachers
Two free workshops are being offered to teachers by Marlboro College Graduate Center. The events are part of the Center's "Teacher Appreciation Month" recognizing the contribution that area teachers have made as the school year comes to an end.
On Saturday, June 17, 2006, the Center is providing "Exploring Assistive Technology for Academic Success." This workshop will explore different types of assistive technology, how they are used and how teachers can benefit from them including:
- text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and visual mapping software.
- learning profile questions and technology-specific questions which teachers can use in assessing which technology would be most useful.
- positive ways to work through the obstacles in supporting the use of assistive technology.
In addition, the workshop will explore some of the rich resources available for finding assistive technology support such as advocacy, financial assistance, product selection and training.
This workshop will be conducted by Lee Henigan Alden, Assistive Technology Coordinator and Educator at Landmark College. She holds a Master of Science in Technology Management from the Graduate Center at Marlboro College. She has worked at Landmark College since 2003 and in higher education since 1989. Lee has a passion for teaching assistive technology, believes that people are more important than technology, and is especially enthusiastic about the challenges and benefits of voice recognition in the academic environment.
The second workshop is "Instructional Design: Putting the Pieces Together." This will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2006. The thrust of this session will be to assist teachers with adapting their courses to online instruction. From theory to design this workshop will explore the steps to creating a pedagogically sound course. The presenter for this session will be Elaine Garofoli. She is President and owner of TLT Consulting, which specializes in the integration of teaching, learning and technology. Garofoli is both an instructor at the Grad Center and serves as a consultant to the Center on educational design and educational technology. Her resume includes more than 30 years demonstrated and combined experience in pedagogy, training, education, and computer technology. In addition, she has spoken at national conferences and delivered workshops nationally and internationally.
Both workshops will be held at Marlboro College Graduate Center, 28 Vernon Street, Brattleboro and will run from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
