Jennifer Darrow, MAT '00

Jennifer Darrow
Jenny is putting her GC education to good use "just over the Connecticut River." Keene State College is getting the benefit of her talents as she serves as their Team Leader for Instructional Technology. In this capacity she heads up faculty development, training and faculty technology grants.

"It's a challenge but I'm thoroughly enjoying it," says Jenny. "It's a juggling act between sustaining the technology that we currently support (technology enabled classrooms, Blackboard, Contribute, Dreamweaver, digital video, etc., etc.) and keeping abreast of new trends."

What are those trends? Jenny relates that the talk around the Keene State campus has been about electronic portfolios. According to Jenny, they're at the very beginning stages and have yet to examine how they could be used across campus but the interest is definitely there, especially in their education department.
"My year at the GC will certainly come into play if KSC heads in this direction."

As an alum of the Grad Center, all this will come as no surprise to Jenny. "E-Portfolios are a great example of the merging between curriculum, pedagogy and technology. My year at the GC will certainly come into play if KSC heads in this direction."

Leading Keene State's technology efforts isn't the only "career" for this energetic multi-tasker. On October 9, 2004, she married Dave Saxe in South Newfane, Vermont.

I had two major developments in the last year: Dave and I were married on October 9th 2004 in South Newfane, Vermont. And on August 27, 2005 the couple welcomed their baby boy into the world. Happily adds Jenny, "Bennett Dan Saxe is now 9 weeks old and is the absolute joy of my life! He's just learning that he has hands and is constantly putting them into his mouth. It's amazing how parenthood puts all extraneous things in perspective."

From the sounds of it, we're sure you have just the right perspective on life, Jenny, and we're proud that you're a member of our community.

Move Ahead, Save Time and Money with Certificate Programs

We are pleased to announce that we are expanding our Certificate Program offerings. This move is being made to respond to the needs of our alums and the public, in general. Those with advanced degrees may be seeking further knowledge but not another Master's degree. Others are simply desiring to upgrade their skills. In both cases, however, students want "something to show for their efforts" rather than just a transcript listing their courses. Our Certificate Programs provide the focus, education, and "seal of approval" to meet this demand. There's additional good news for residents of Vermont as well. We are in the process of finalizing the opportunity for tuition assistance for many of these programs Under the Provisions of the VT High Skills Training Project, 70% of a student's tuition cost may be eligible for coverage.

Undergraduate level intro courses are fully online and require that the applicant has studied at an institute of higher education prior to admittance. The advanced certificates require prior completion of a Bachelor's degree. Advanced courses are hybrid by design with attendance encouraged on a twice-monthly basis. However, distant participants can access the classes through podcasting and use of our discussion platform. All classes are 3 credits unless otherwise indicated. Certificates can be completed within a year.

Undergrad Programs:

  • Networks and Computer Systems Administration
  • Web Development
  • Managing Through IT

Grad programs:

  • Advanced Certificate in Web Design
  • Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study - Teaching
  • Advanced Certificate in Web Programming
  • Socially Responsible Management

New Gallery at the GC

KP helps with installation of new gallery
We've put the finishing touches on our new gallery.

The gallery is located on the first floor in the space formerly occupied by the USDA. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of Grad Center employees Kelly Fletcher, Kathy Urffer, and KP Peterson, this inviting space has been completely refurbished. Visitors will now find a changing display of works of art in a comfortable, brightly lit environment that allows the pieces to be fully appreciated.

Currently on display is the astounding /microMODERN /- an exhibit of art in science. Sponsored by Chroma Technology Corp. /microMODERN / features formerly microscopic images created for research by some of the world's top scientists re-formatted as photographic works of art. Most of the images were obtained via CCD cameras showing fluorescence microscopy. Viewed in this enlarged presentation, they capture the goal of all great art - our re-thinking the world around us.

When you're dropping by the Center, make time to enjoy this terrific addition to our community.

Class Notes

Trish (Mellett) Keenan, ISM '98 recently told us: In September, I completed the 26.2 mile Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. I continue to have more fun than I should doing development in ColdFusion, as well as web design and print publications for the Cambridge Public Schools. Life remains great for the girls and I in the big city.

Kamini Fernandez, MSIE '04 updated us: Monsoon days are over and the sun is shining again. "October heat" in Mumbai is said to be the "hottest"! My company- http://www.mielesecurity.com, is spreading its tentacles throughout the globe now with clientele in various parts of the world, like Mauritius (my native country), China, Middle East. They are planning to walk towards Europe and US as well. I read a lot when I have time and planning to give as much exam as I can to strengthen my career. I must say that I got interested in the network security field when I was doing the MSIE course from Marlboro College. Part of the credit goes to the college and my husband who explained to me the basics of networking and answered whatever queries I used to have.
