"STAND BY YOUR BEDS !!" It's The Graduate Center (series of) Bootcamps.

BOOTS
We have parsed out elements of our basic web design courses, collated the input of our esteemed 'in the field' faculty members to bring even more relevance AND taken the advice of the Program Directors as to what aspects would enhance students' ability to really attack Fall courses. Here's what we have...

Weekend focused two-day/all-day sessions fostering excellence with: HTML, Web Basics, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, FLASH, Linux/Unix, Web (e)-Marketing strategies, and Stylesheets, The Bootcamps will help students prepare for the technical aspects of their upcoming courses while still stressing the bigger picture around the organizationally transformative aspects of their learning here.

We have pulled out the Ortizes and Ramirezes (big hitters) of our faculty roster and can guarantee wonderful learning environments for all participants. If you (like I) were trained in the wonders of Photoshop 5.5 and Dreamweaver 2.0, then it may well be time you were exposed to the enhanced power and techniques that come bundled with Photoshop CS and DW MX 2004. Space permitting - buzz us for opportunities. To give you an idea of the demand we are seeing, we have approximately 40 students coming back to us (continuing) in the Fall (these are all current students), we expect MANY more and had over 90 participants attend this past weekend's Grant Writing workshop. The Buzzzzz gets louder with each passing day!

Alumni Reunion and Capstone Fair

Graduating members of the Class of 2005 were in the spotlight on Saturday, June 18th.

The event was the Graduate Center's annual Capstone Project Fair - a time for students to exhibit publicly their major accomplishments. Capstone Projects demand that students fuse the knowledge they have gained across the breadth of their studies at the Grad Center and then apply it in a new and creative fashion taking it to the "next level."

Students at Capstone Fair
For many, Capstone Projects are actual, working developments that will be applied by the student's employer or will be used to launch a new business by the student.

The projects ranged from a suite of tools supporting and empowering non-profit companies, to a project facilitating collaboration between Classics scholars, to a redesign of a site for the Urban Collaborative - a public independent middle school for at risk students.

While the Fair gave the graduating students an opportunity to take a bow for all their work, the event provided another benefit for them as well. Keeping with tradition, alumni returned and critiqued the projects with their creators allowing the future graduates to gain objective, supportive feedback that will lead to further refinements as well as well-earned satisfaction.

Discussions and camaraderie continued through the day with a barbecue lunch, and a social evening hosted by the Brattleboro Museum and the Graduate Center.

Hats off the graduating students and to all who made this day memorable for them.

Grantwriting Workshop SRO

It was standing room only this past Saturday at the "Introduction to Grant Writing for Non-profit Managers" workshop. Over 90 participants from as far away as Bedford, New Hampshire jammed the 2 east classroom

The featured presenter Audrey Levin McLaughlin, Senior Development Officer at Marlboro College, garnered rave reviews at the end of her 90 minute session. McLaughlin has over sixteen years experience in all phases of fundraising and worked for such major, non-profit institutions as New York University before joining the Marlboro College administration.

Using examples from her own experience, PowerPoint, and handouts, Audrey gave an information-packed presentation covering how private and corporate foundations function, basic grant writing research strategies and tools, how organizations can match their needs with benefactors' missions, the components of a successful grant proposal, and websites full of useful information for grant seekers.

Thanks to Audrey's outstanding performance, we're already getting requests for news of other, upcoming events.

Take a well-deserved bow, Audrey.

And thanks, too, to Margaret Donahue who served exceptionally as the project manager.

Class Notes

Kristopher Wiemer, MAT '02 recently wrote us: I thought I'd pass on some news for the next newsletter and a position announcement as well.

My wife and I are moving back to Western Massachusetts where I will be taking on the position of Academic Technology Coordinator at Deerfield Academy. I've spent the last couple of years as the Instructional Technology Specialist at Philadelphia University and we are now moving back home. In addition to moving back to Western MA, I've had a few things published this Spring including an entry in the Low Threshold Application Collection (http://jade.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/lta/), an article in The Journal of Interlibrary Loan, "Document Delivery and Electronic Reserve (on creating an online support site for using Docutek ERes)," and an interview in Online Classroom (on incorporating active learning in online classes).

With my departure, my current position is wide open. If you'd be so kind as to include the position announcement that would be great. While I know many of GC Alums are local, we always seem to move around a bit, or know someone who is looking to move around. The position annoucement can be found at http://www.philau.edu/humanresources/InstructionalTechnologySpecialist.htm.

Hope all is going well at the GC and I'm looking forward to participating in activities now that I'll be back in the area.
