Front and Center, Lisa Brooks, MAT '02
Lisa Brooks
"Don't let anyone tell you China has Broadband!" says Lisa Brooks - highly involved Grad Center alum, teacher, and all-around whirlwind.

For the past two years, Lisa has been involved with a group in southern VT that received a Freeman Grant to do an Asian/American Cultural Exchange hybrid course with students from her school, Twin Valley High School in Wilmington, VT, and Brattleboro High School. Classes meet two days a week face to face and the rest online. Lisa and the group spent three weeks in China this spring, and you can take a virtual tour of their visit at: http://www.aacexchange.org. Click on the 2005 trip link. Lisa notes: "My experience at a number of Internet Cafes and schools is that their Broadband is about as fast as my dial up in Halifax, VT! I know China is an up and coming super power, and I did see fine multimedia rooms in the excellent schools we visited (we did not visit small poor rural schools). Yet, the smoky Internet Cafes are filled with teens playing games and chatting online, so I'd say we're neck and neck on that front."

Lisa began her career at the GC by getting involved in the ITC program at its inception. Lisa states, "After two or three of the courses I realized I LOVED what I was learning and started talking to Claudine Keenan about the MAT program. It was a great fit for me. I thought when I started the program that I would just scratch the technology itch that I'd built up over the years as an art teacher who was interested in Graphic Arts. I always thought there was more I could do in my classroom and that maybe a web focus was part of that. What I came away with is so much more!"
"I loved the immersion of the one year program"

Lisa is quick to point out that her degree from Marlboro allowed her to walk right into licensure in the first wave of Vermont's information technology teachers, and she now teaches both art and technology at the middle and high school levels. Through Marlboro's Continuing Education program, Lisa has also been teaching to teachers in the area for the past three years and has built a large repertoire of course materials to support teachers in their own quests to use technology in their classroom. And she has begun teaching both art and technology courses online for Community College of Vermont using Blackboard.

And how does Lisa sum up her feelings about the GC? "Have I mentioned I love the Grad Center? I was asked if I would do it all over again, and I can't answer any way but YES! I loved the immersion of the one year program (for me this was perfect), the quality of the instruction, and the attention to detail the staff gave each one of us. Were there tough times during that year, of course, but getting through them, learning new skills, it all made me so much more confident both technologically and pedagogically. "

We love having you as alum, too, Lisa.

Open House, June 18th

Still compiling that first million but wish you could make a major donation to the Grad Center? You can - and it won't cost you a cent.

You can show your support for Marlboro by urging someone you know to attend our open house on Saturday, June 18th. Combining this event with the Capstone Fair and Alumni Reunion should let our visitors get the full picture of the opportunities and values of a Grad Center education. As a supportive alum, you are the both the embodiment of that education and the best advertising the GC can have.

Our theme is "The Year to Change Your Career." Visitors will have the chance to learn about our programs, tour the facilities, and - of course - talk with alums and current students.

The open house will run from 10:30 a.m. - noon. It's easy to register: just go to www.gradcenter.marlboro.edu/news

Class Notes

Dale P. Green, ISM '03 recently sent us the following update: "I went back to school for my Masters when I got laid off - figuring it'd help me with future employment. Well - thus far, I've had a few freelance jobs and have been working at a restaurant (that I really enjoy working at). In January, they asked me to be the part time marketing manager (events, web, lots of external relations). It's fun, I like it, and it's really low stress. I came to a point where the level of stress I have in the "corporate" and the commute time involved just wasn't worth it (that's what happens when you live in the middle of nowhere. You commute). That being said, I'm still rescuing dogs, which is and was always my passion, but I haven't made the newspaper lately. Knock on wood. Hope all is well." Dale P Green - rott10brat@tds.net
